One of the pioneer sounds
of recorded music in Canada belongs to the voice of the unmatchable
Wilf Carter When Wilf made his first recordings (which were probably
some of the first ever made on acetate), would he have ever dreamed
that someday he would have albums with such titles as "32
Wonderful Years" and "50 Golden Years"? Not likely.
Wilf Carter (known as
Montana Slim in the USA) had almost retired completely from a
lifetime of singing about the West, and yodeling his way from
Coast to Coast, when he became associated with Rocklands Entertainment.
In fact, it was at the encouragement of his friend and fellow
performer Johnny Wright (of the Johnny and Jack duo, and husband
to Country Queen Kitty Wells) that he did his last five years
of Canadian Concerts under the wing of Rocklands Entertainment.
Not bad, considering that on the first of these tours, Wilf's
80th birthday was celebrated.
But to true country fans,
it doesn't matter how old you are. If they loved you once, they'll
love you always, and Wilf's fans proved this beyond a doubt.
When Wilf Carter stepped in front of the microphone at 80 years
of age and uttered the words "I Feel Like a Kitten Tonight",
the fans roared with approval... and when he struck a chord on
his trademark vintage Martin Guitar and lead his band into a
rousing version of "There's a Love Knot in
My Lariat", there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
